Adapted from the booklet "Where to Ride", a joint project by Parks and Leisure, Victoria and Tread Lightly! Australia.

First, wash your bike:

Washing off mud makes it easier to check over the bike. It also helps prevent the transfer of weed seeds and fungal diseases from one place to another.

Frame and Suspension:

  • No cracks, loose bolts, sloppy steering. Tighten to specifications.
  • Straight handlebars and secure grips.
  • Lights in working order.
  • Smooth suspension. Stand the bike with rear wheel off the ground and try to lift the wheel. There should on be about 1-2 mm of free play.
  • No fluid leaks from front forks or shocks.
  • Suspension settings set to your weight and riding style.

Wheels and Tyres:

  • Tyre tread OK and tyres inflated to proper position.
  • Axle nuts tight.
  • No loose or broken spokes or cracks in hubs or rims.
  • Wheels turn freely.
  • No free play in wheel bearings. Check by rocking wheel from side to side.
  • Chain and sprockets no worn. Lubricate chain.
  • Master link condition AOK.
  • Brakes and controls.
  • Brake pads and shoes.
  • Hydraulic fluid level AOK.
  • Rotors/drums not cracked or worn - replace those with cracks no matter how small.
  • All cables have smooth operation. No frayed ends, kinks or rust.
  • All hand and foot levers move freely but not sloppy. Position to suit your style.
  • Think about fitting a quality bashplate if your bike does not have one already.

Engine:

  • No oil leaks. Is jetting right for altitude etc?
  • Change oil and other fluids if necessary.
  • Air filter clean and oiled.
  • Crisp return of throttle with handlebars in any position. Return spring not broken or worn.
  • Spark plugs clean.
  • Exhaust pipe, muffler and spark arrestor in good condition. Remember that the most common complaint levied against riders is noise and we need to keep as many places open to riding as possible.
