PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE ACTION OF SOME IRRESPONSIBLE AND INCONSIDERATE RIDERS, THE GORGE STATION RETREAT IS NOW CLOSED TO MOTORBIKES. THIS PAGE HAS BEEN LEFT AS A REMINDER OF THE NEED TO CONSIDER OTHERS WHILST RIDING AND IN THE HOPE THAT THE DECISION TO CLOSE OFF THIS WONDERFUL PARK TO BIKES MAY BE REVIEWED.

The Gorge Station Retreat is a 3,300 acre working cattle property, with a large number of camping grounds, bike and 4WD tracks. The landscape and views includes beautiful remnant rainforest, working paddocks, morning mist rising over the lower paddocks and inspiring evening sunsets.

How to Get There:

(If heading down from Brisbane)

Travel down the Mount Lindsay Highway, over the Border ranges.
Travel down through Woodenbong, Urbenville and finally Bonalbo.
About 2 kms out of Bonalbo, turn left at Peacock Creek Road.
About 2 kms in you will see the signs.

Access by standard road car is fine, we took a Falcon utility and a Falcon station wagon. We noticed one camper with an older Toyota Celica! However a 4WD and/or motor/quad bikes will be required if you wish to explore all of the the station.

Accommodation and Amenities:

Glasby Homestead.
The Homestead has its own fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and toilet. This saves bringing your own cooking utensils, sleeping bags and allows you to really enjoy everything the Gorge Station Retreat and surrounding areas have to offer. With three double bedrooms and shared bathroom and dining facilities, the Homestead can accommodate up to several families.

The Butcher Bird Cabin.
On our first trip (Easter 2003), we stayed at the cabin, which has its own fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and toilet, thus making for a carefree weekend. This saves bringing your own cooking utensils, sleeping bags and allows you to really enjoy everything the Gorge Station Retreat and surrounding areas have to offer. It also has its own very good heater.

The Bat Cave Bunkhouse.
The bunkhouse accommodates up to 12 people, six in each side. Staying in the bunkhouse gives you access to the bush kitchen as part of your fees. The amenities block is close by as well.

Camping grounds
Camping grounds were all in lovely settings by the creek throughout the property. Some had power, some had water and some were more remote. The choice is really yours.

Bike/Quad Riding:

For novices, there are a number of grassed areas available whilst you get used to your bike and many graded roads and tracks. There are plenty of tracks suited to the more experienced rider.  We were lucky enough to have Gary take us on a guided tour of some tracks, which was really worthwhile.

Four-Wheel Driving:

We didn't take our 4WD on our first trip, but will be doing so on a return visit, so watch this space.

Other Activities:
Bushwalking
Tennis
Bird-watching
Fishing
Outdoor chapel -  Very friendly Easter Service!
Tenterfield to the West just over an hour's drive.
Casino to the East just under an hour's drive.
