These are some of the general things we have found so far. Click on the links above for some of the areas that may require a little more attention:
It is important to select motorbikes or quad bikes that suit both the riders and intended purposes. We have deliberately selected several different types of bikes so that we can experience for ourselves the different natures of each. Kick Start v Electric Start. Most bikes under 250cc are Kick start. If you are just starting out though, an electric start helps with the kids and those who are just learning to ride. 2-Stroke v 4-Stroke. We found that the 4-Stroke bikes were quieter and have a smoother power band, which is great for learners and carrying a pillion passenger. Conversely though, for an experience rider, many 2-Strokes may offer a more exciting ride. Generally 4-Strokes are quieter and this may be an important consideration in some places.
Don't forget that you need to be able to get yourselves, your bikes and equipment there and back in one piece. We found that until we purchased a three-bay bike-trailer, we were taking two cars with us - for only four people. A Ute and small box-trailer for the bikes and another vehicle for everything else. Having a large lock-box on the draw-bar of the trailer helps with storage.
Remember to take into account the amenities at where you will be staying. No need to carry an extra frypan and gas stove if there is already an extra kitchen. Use the space saved for extra fuel. You also need to consider that you may not spend the entire break on the bike. Many parks offer other great activities from bush-walking, campfires, farm and wild animals through to fossicking and caving. The Easter Service at the Gorge Station Retreat was a real treat, as were the goats and miniature horses at Rover Park.
